DELFIN-VILLAZON, Carlos Amed; GOMEZ-DIAZ, Dianelly  e  BARCIA-SARDINAS, Sinaí. Dangerous meteorological phenomena that have affected the coastal area of Cienfuegos Bay. Rev. Cubana Met. [online]. 2020, vol.26, n.2  Epub 01-Jun-2020. ISSN 2664-0880.

This paper aims to identify the main dangerous meteorological phenomena that have historically affected the coastal area of Cienfuegos Bay. To achieve this, all the chronologies of tropical cyclones, severe local storms, strong winds and heavy rains available both nationally and at the Provincial Meteorological Center of Cienfuegos were consulted to identify the Dangerous Meteorological Phenomena that have affected it between the years 1851-2018. There were consulted numerous existing bibliography and the experiences of different actors present in the area. As a main result, it was obtained that Dangerous Meteorological Phenomena, over the years, have caused numerous economic, social and ecological effects in the coastal area of Cienfuegos Bay, being the tropical cyclone the most destructive organism, followed by heavy rains and coastal flooding, showing that there are still vulnerabilities despite having modern hydrometeorological surveillance technologies, as well as civil defense and early warning systems. These results are very useful in assessing the risks and vulnerabilities of settlements and economic objectives of the coastal area of the bay and will serve to better understand dangerous meteorological phenomena and their impact.
