SANTANA MENDEZ, Arlen Tamara; CASTILLO HERNANDEZ, Rolando  e  SUAREZ GOMEZ, Liliam. Variation of the functional state of the stomatognathic system with orthodontic treatment of patients with adachia or hyperdachia. Acta méd centro [online]. 2022, vol.16, n.3, pp. 407-416.  Epub 30-Set-2022. ISSN 2709-7927.

Introduction:

the most frequent vertical malocclusions are adachia and hyperdachia, they can be caused by dental malpositions or bone base problems, and according to this, and their treatment differs. Regardless of their cause, these malocclusions compromise the functions of the stomatognathic system. The response of the stomatognathic system can be very varied.

Objective:

to determine if there are differences in the variations of the clinical index of the Helkimo test in cases with adachia or hyperdachia during orthodontic treatment.

Methods:

a quasi-experimental, prospective study was carried out at the "Victoria de Santa Clara" Teaching Stomatology Clinic, in the City of Santa Clara, between October 2018 and October 2019. The working population consisted of all the patients who attended the clinic. An intentional non-probabilistic sample of 30 patients aged 15 to 19 years with adachia or hyperdachia was taken. Morphological aspects were recorded and the clinical index of the Helkimo test was applied.

Results:

temporomandibular dysfunction was more frequent among women (21) and 11 of them with severe symptoms. Adachia was more damaging to the functioning of the stomatognathic system than hyperdachia. All the patients improved the functional status of the stomatognathic system with orthodontic treatment.

Conclusions:

Dysfunction indicators were more frequent, especially in the most severe categories in patients with adachia. A beneficial effect of orthodontic treatment is demonstrated in cases with vertical malocclusions (adachia or hyperdachia).
