MARTINEZ GARCIA, Laymi et al. Therapeutical potential of cannabinoids as neuroprotective agents . Rev Cubana Farm [online]. 2007, vol.41, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2988.

Cannabis sativa L. or cáñamo has focused man's attention for its therapeutical and medical application since ancient times, and yet, at the beginning of XXI century, this plant continues being polemic for the scientific community as a natural source and in the study and application of its derivatives. More than 70 cannabinoid compounds with pharmacological action on the central nervous system have been phytochemically described. At present, a great amount of valuable information and experimental data have been generated that correlate Cannabis sativa and its secondary metabolites with medicine (therapeutic treatment), pharmacology (experimental animal models) and synthetic chemistry (design and generation of new structures), showing the importance of the study about this plant, its extracts, metabolites and bio-precursors of therapeutic agents. Taking these points into consideration, this article reviews the therapeutic implications of cannabinoid systems (endogenous, natural, and synthetic) on the neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system, including concepts of cannabinoid types, cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptor systems and preclinical studies devoted to the neuroprotective effects of the cannabinoids from 1970 to 2005

Palavras-chave : Cannabis; cannabinoid; neuroprotection; therapeutic potential; ischemia; neurodegeneration.
