VAZQUEZ VIGOA, Alfredo et al. Daño vascular en el hipertenso esencial. Rev cubana med [online]. 2003, vol.42, n.6, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-302X.

A sample of 140 individuals (70 hypertensive and 70 normotensive workers) was studied aimed at verifying wether the vascular damage determined by the intimal medial complex thickness (I/M C) and the evidence of atheroma plaque in the carotid and femoral artery were higher among the first and at evaluating the relations of these structural changes between both arteries. All the patients underwent Mode B Eco Doppler of the carotid and femoral artery to show the intimal medial complex thickness and evidence of the atheroma plaque. Subjects of both sexes aged 25-70 were included. Tests to compare proportions and averages for the quantitative variables (imtimal medial thickness and number of plaques) were used to compare the two groups (study and control). These comparisons were made in a simple way (univariate). It was found that the intimal medial complex thickness of the carotid artery was mainly present in the group of hypertensive patients (48.6 %). It was also observed a statistical significant association between the increase of SAP/DAP and the I/M C thickness in the groups of hypertensives (p = 0.000). In the group of hypertensive patients, SAP attained a higher preponderance in the influence of I/M C thicknes than DAP (p = 0.005 vs 0.01). It was concluded that the highest averages of I/M C thickness were found in the group of hypertensive patients and that both SAP and DAP were determinant in its appearance, although SAP had a higher statitical significance (p = 0.005). The presence of plaque in both arteries was higher in the group of hypertensives. A siginificant association between the I/M C thickness and the evidence of atheroma plaque was proved.
