From 1997-1999 our hospital implemented a mass casualty management system by stages using the re-organization of the patient flow and a system of function cards located in a pre-established well-known points. First, the main difficulties of the previous drills were detected and the alert plan was proved. Then a code of classification by vital support necessity for all the emergencies was implemented and a treatment area for each of them was defined. In the third phase, a group of cards describing the functions of each of the members of the team on duty were prepared and placed in each Emergency Department and in other pre-selected areas. The system allows a better mobilization of human resources, a more homogeneous work to be done by all the teams on duty, a speedy preparation of the Emergency Department. It also eliminates the possibility that any member of the medical and non-medical teams on duty may ignore his/her functions and allows a more coherent casualty management.
