INIGUEZ ROJAS, Luisa. Geografía y salud en Cuba: tendencias y prioridades. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2003, vol.29, n.4, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3127.

The relations with and contributions of geography to the health sciences have been poorly explored in our country. This paper is aimed at making reflections on these links on the basis of theoretical and methodological assumptions as well as the main components that support them. It sets out considerations about the meaning of heterogeneity of the territorial basis of the national health system, the limitations in the use of territorial scales, levels and units for measuring the health problems, and discusses the potentialities of a greater approach to geographic spaces as “sites” of health damage occurrence. It deals with the need to take actions that facilitate the compatibility of the different sources of territorial information and their units, so as to make more rigorous and relevant analysis. Particular attention is paid to the progressive use of maps in the health care sector and to the discussion of minimal requirements for the utilization of mapping techniques applied to health management or to the interpretation of uneven distribution of health problems. Examples that illustrate the main lines of the current work and the advancements in the introduction of theoretical and methodological resources of geography in the health care sector are provided
