An educational intervention was performed in 56 visits to 7 families with leprosy history, belonging to "Ramón López Peña" University Polyclinic of Santiago de Cuba from October 2008 to October 2009 in order to increase the knowledge of this disease in this population at risk, for which variables such as age, educational background, concept of leprosy, symptoms and complications among others were analyzed. The Mc Nemar's statistical validation test was applied with a p <0,05 significance level. The results confirmed that before the instruction only 17 patients of the series knew about the topic, and after it was completed the number of patients who received appropriate information increased to 52. This achievement has allowed to increase epidemiological surveillance of their families, to diagnose early the infection and to guarantee a better quality of life.
