CLAVERIA CLARK, Rafael Alberto; RODRIGUEZ GUERRERO, Katiuska  e  NA SISTO, Maritza. Periodontal disease and erectile dysfunction: Is there a direct association?. MEDISAN [online]. 2015, vol.19, n.11, pp. 1399-1407. ISSN 1029-3019.

The periodontal disease is mainly caused by bacterial infections located in the gum and the structures supporting the tooth (ligament and alveolar bone) that destroy progressively these soft and hard tissues, which leads to teeth mobility and, as time passes by, the lost of teeth. It has been established during the last years that the periodontal affection is associated to the vascular atherosclerosis, and this, in turn, to the erectile dysfunction. Although this strong association is not very well-known yet, there is evidence to support it and some of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved have been stated: systemic inflammation, molecular mimicry, bacteremia and vascular infection due to periodontal pathogen agents. Due to the importance of this health condition and the few studies about this topic in Cuba, we decided to carry out this work, where the main aspects related to the topic are exposed

Palavras-chave : periodontitis; periodontal disease; erectile dysfunction; endothelial dysfunction; vascular diseases; atherosclerosis.
