Environmental management of groundwater in different geographical contexts along time, have been pointly focused to the protection of supply sources against contamination and exhaustion without enough consideration to the influence of its hydrographical basin. With the objective of overcoming these inadequacies GAIAS model was designed for the integral environmental management of groundwater. Its validation is supplemented with its implementation in Holguín basin as a case study, obtaining positive results that are revealed through the index of environmental sustainability of the water in the basin (ISAAC), calculated on the basis of observations of the environmental indicators of state, pressure and response, in correspondence with the hydrological, environmental and socioeconomic functions of the basin.
