Susceptibility patterns of uropathogens isolated from patients with infection in the teaching General Hospital Ambato. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2024, vol.43  Epub 15-Ago-2024. Introduction:

Urinary tract infections constitute the eighth cause of morbimortality in Ecuador. Antimicrobial resistance complicates infection and generates a worldwide public health problem.

Objective:

To determine the susceptibility profile of the main bacterial species causing urinary tract infections through laboratory reports and clinical histories of the Hospital General Docente Ambato.

Methods:

Non-experimental, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional design. We studied 245 cases of positive urine cultures.

Results:

The most frequently isolated microorganisms were E. coli (82.4 %), K. pneumoniae (4.9 %) and K. oxytoca (3.7 %). The highest percentages of sensitivity were observed for fosfomycin, ceftazidime and ceftriaxone; and the highest levels of resistance were determined for ampicillin/sulbactam, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, cefazolin, ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and nitrofurantin. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases were produced by 6.5 % of the strains.

Conclusions:

The results suggest a revision of the therapeutic schemes for empirical treatment of urinary tract infections at the Hospital General Docente Ambato. Knowledge of antimicrobial susceptibility patterns allows a better choice of antibiotics for first line management.
