A study was carried out in 40 deceased patients who died because of an acute peritonitis resulting in a syndrome of multiple organ failure. Most patients were female aged subjects who presented with an associated or baseline disease. Patients were affected by a cholelithiasis with more than I year of evolution and came late to the Emergency Department of "Saturnino Lora" Provincial Teaching hospital when they began to suffer the symptoms of acute cholecystitis, so they were operated on within the first 24 hours of the diagnosis or afterwards, but at that moment complications had led to a nonfavourable evolution.
