A multicentric, descriptive and retrospective study of 11 500 patients operated on of inguinocrural hernia at 12 hospitals of Cuba, from January, 1990, to december, 1996, was conducted. Data were obtained from the medical histories and were processed at the General Hospital of Santiago de Cuba, where information from the selected assistance centers was received. It was observed a marked predominance of the male sex that was three time the number of females. Infections were also more frequent in urgent operations and surgical wounds, although there were no patients with severe sepsis. The real usefulness of antibiotic prophylaxis, in spite of being a therapeutic conduct followed by many authors, including the authors of this paper, was not proved in the present experience. The types of antibiotics administered were not approached either, since those available on each occasion were used
