Resumen

FUENTES VALDES, Edelberto  y  JIMENEZ PANEQUE, Rosa. Riesgo quirúrgico en pacientes mayores de 60 años. Rev Cubana cir [online]. 2000, vol.39, n.1, pp.73-81. ISSN 0034-7493.

A prospective study of 364 patients over 60 years old that were operated on at the Service of General Surgery of the"Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical and Surgical Hospital from May to December, 1994, was conducted. 55.2 % were females and 44.8 % males. The number of patients decreased with age from 224 between 60 and 69 years old to 107 between 70 and 79 years old and to 33 over 80. The univariate analysis showed a relationship of the complications and mortality with preoperative stay (p < 0.0005), the presence of neoplasias (p < 0.0005) and the importance of the operation (p < 0.005). There was an association between the body mass index and mortality (p < 0.05). Through the logistical regression analysis it was found that sex (p < 0.0105) and the importance of the operation (p < 0.0003) influenced on the probabilites of complications. The amount of related diseases (p < 0.0187) also influenced on the probability of mortality. Age had no influence on the complications or on mortality (p < 0.05). It was concluded that age by itself should not be a contraindication for surgery

Palabras clave : LENGTH OF STAY; POSTOPERATIVE COMPLICATIONS [mortality]; BODY MASS INDEX; RISK FACTORS; AGED.
