LEAL MURSULI, Armando et al. Resultados del tratamiento quirúrgico en el traumatismo cardíaco y de grandes vasos. Rev Cubana Cir [online]. 2000, vol.39, n.3, pp.208-212. ISSN 0034-7493.
It is reported that the frequency of surgically treated heart and vascular injuries has increased considerable due to a rise of urban violence and to the improvement of the emergency medical services, mainly in the hospital transportation that has allowed that patients with cardiovascular injuries arrive alive to the hospitals. In order to know the characteristics of the trauma and the results of the treatment, a retrospective research was made among these patients from 1987 to 1999. 15,11 males with an average age of 29 years old were operated on. 11 patients had heart wounds, 2 of the superior vena cava, 1 of the azygous vein and 1 of the inferior vena cava. A prevalence of steel arm lesions (93,3%) was observed. The main form of presentation was cardiac tamponade (40%). The left posterolateral and anterolateral thoracotomy were the most used surgical approaches. Pulmonary laceration was the the most frrequent associated lesion (46,6%). The respiratory infections were the main complication. Only one patient died. The need of an immediate surgical treatment to attain a higher survival was demonstrated
