The sample was composed of 58 patients: 33 men and 25 women. 67.2 % were over 50. A vertical incision was performed in 94.8 % of the patients for approaching thorax. The neoplasia was located in the right lung in 55.2 % and centrally in 48.3 %. The most frequent resection was pneumonectomy with 48.2 %. There was a 10.3 % of surgical accidents. The respiratory complications predominated with 19 %, whereas postoperative mortality was 12.1 %. It was observed a prevalence of adenocarcinoma with 41.4 %. There was a significant statistical relation (p < 0.05) between mortality from smoking and from complications, since when the first decreases, the second increases
