PADRON CHACON, Raúl; MUNIZ MANZANO, Elina; SOTO FERNANDEZ, Ángel  y  BARROSO LOPEZ, Orlando. Some variables of the maxillofacial surgical treatment and bioethics in the older adult. Rev Cubana Cir [online]. 2008, vol.47, n.4. ISSN 0034-7493.

INTRODUCTION. The maxillofacical surgical treatment is specially complex in older adults and the pre-, trans- and transoperative care are very important to obtain satisfactory results. The objective of this paper was to characterize some variables of the maxillofacial surgical treatment in the older adult and its importance as regards bioethical considerations. METHODS. A preliminary descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 60 patients aged 60 or over that received attention at the maxillofacial surgery department of «Rampa» Teaching Polyclinic, in Havana City. The following variables were analyzed: age, sex, pathological history, knowledge about the informed consent and the most frequent diagnoses of intra-oral and extra-oral affections. RESULTS. The highest number of patients was found among those aged 60-69 (58.4 %), whereas the smallest representation was observed in the group aged 80 and over (5 %). Arterial hypertension affected 41.6 % of the patients (25), followed by diabetes mellitus (16.6 %) and arterial hypertension-associated diabetes (8.3 %). The intra-oral surgical treatment accounted for 75 % of the total and the extra-oral for 25 %. The most important intra-oral diagnosis was that of the 4th degree caries (25; 41.6 %), and the extra-oral was the basocellular carcinoma (10; 6 %). All the patients were surveyed about the knowledge of the informed consent. 35 patients (58 %) gave adequate answers to the questionnaire, and 25 (41.9 %) did not know anything about the topic. CONCLUSIONS. The intra-oral surgical treatment was mostly represented by female elderly. Arterial hypertension proved to be a risk factor in this population. There were more patients with adequate information on the informed consent.
