BOSQUE DIEGO, Omar de Jesús et al. Vulvar cancer: clinical picture, histopathology and survival (1980-2004). Rev Cubana Cir [online]. 2008, vol.47, n.4. ISSN 0034-7493.

INTRODUCTION. Vulvar cancer is a rare affection, but the increase of life expectancy in Cuba makes it to stand out among the gynecological cancers. Due to its biosocial impact, the present study was aimed at describing the onset symptoms, and at determining the most common histopathology and the stage of the disease on diagnosis, as well as the frequency of the relapses and the global survival at 5 and 10 years. METHODS. A descriptive retrospective study of the female patients attended at the Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology for 25 years (1980-2004) was conducted. 373 patients with histopathogical diagnosis of vulvar cancer that received treatment were included. RESULTS: Average age was 63.4 years old. 59.2 % of the patients were in stage II and III cancer. The epidermoid carcinoma affected 76.68 % of them. Inguinal lymphatic metastases were found in 26.82 %. The disease recurred in 21.18 % of the patients. Global survival at 5 years was 65 % and at 10 years it was approximately 45 %. CONCLUSIONS: The diagnosis of vulvar cancer is still late and it is observed a trend towards its appearance at early ages. Recurrences and global survival are not satisfactory.
