GUANCHE GARCELL, Humberto; MORALES PEREZ, Clara; FRESNEDA SEPTIEM, Gloria e GONZALEZ LOPEZ, José. Nosocomial infection incidence in general surgery: "Joaquín Albarrán" Hospital (2002-2008). Rev Cubana Cir [online]. 2010, vol.49, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2945.
INTRODUCTION: The infection is one of the more fearsome complications of surgical procedures and remains a frequent problem in health services. However, there are not reports on the trends of incidence rates of nosocomial infections in Cuba. The aim of present paper was to describe the incidence of nosocomial infections in the General Surgery Service of "Joaquín Albarrán" Clinical Surgical Hospital from 2002 to 2008. METHODS: An analytical and descriptive study of temporal series was conducted. The accumulated incidence rate of nosocomial infections was estimated, as well as the accumulated incidence of infection in surgical site with its respective 95% confidence intervals. The infections ratio by location was determined. RESULTS: In 10714 discharged patients we performed 8752 surgical interventions. A total of 641 were diagnosed with nosocomial infection (6% [95% CI 5,55; 6,45]), 479 of them with infection in surgical site (5,5% [95% CI 5,02; 5.98]); in both cases with a light trend to decrease during period. The surgical site infections were the more frequent nosocomial infection (70,4% of patients) followed by the bloodstream (21,9%). CONCLUSIONS: There was a trend to decrease the nosocomial infection incidence and of surgical site infection in patients admitted in general surgery service. Such trend may increases by modification of surveillance strategies and the consolidation of prevention practices of nosocomial infections.
