Vitamin E comprises different compounds such as tocopherols and tocotrienols. The most important in the human species is RRR-a-tocopherol. One of the main functions attributed to vitamin E is its antioxidant action. However, other functions have been observed that are not connected with this action, as its effects on cellular proliferation and the fagocitic action in the immune system that is related at the same time to the effect of this vitamin as a messenger of the oxidative cellular state. Parallel, there are other evidences of its relationship with apoptosis. In this paper we intend to go deep into these functions of vitamin E due to its great potentialities to be used in the therapy of medical and dental diseases.
