LOPEZ RODRIGUEZ, Anselmo et al. Orthognathic surgery: a means of gaining beauty and health. Rev Cubana Estomatol [online]. 2004, vol.41, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-297X.
Orthognatic surgery is the surgical method used to correcting maxillomandibular development anomalies. Some of these anomalies may occur at the time of birth and occasionally, they may be hereditary because several members of the same family face this problem. The multidisciplinary work is aimed at improving the function and aesthetics of the maxillofacial region by inducing the movement of affected bone and soft tissues. To this end, common universal aesthetic patterns found in literature according to sex and race were used. It should be pointed out that the American continent is multiracial, so, there is mixing of whites, blacks, Chinese, etc; therefore, the concept of beauty is construed in different ways according to a particular country or specific idiosyncrasy. For Cuban maxillofacial surgeons, beauty is harmony of all bone and soft structures of the face upon which their main working objectives are based. This paper presented cases with various diagnoses before and after surgery, who were treated by this orthognathic service.
