Resumen

RIBEIRO FONTANINI, Carlos Rogério; RIBEIRO, Adair; ATILAS ALEVA, Natanael  y  ABREU ALVES, Fábio. Periodontal evaluation of patients with diabetes mellitus. Rev Cubana Estomatol [online]. 2006, vol.43, n.2. ISSN 0034-7507.

Diabetes mellitus carriers show systemic manifestations that may interfere with odontological care. The risk of periodontitis increases with metabolic decompensation of a patient. The objective of our research work was to evaluate the periodontal condition in patients with diabetes mellitus. Fifty seven diabetic patients were examined. CPITN index served to assess the periodontal conditions. It was established that metabolic control was inadequate since 38 patients (66,67%) presented with altered glycemic levels. Three hundred and forty two sextants were assessed, 49 of which were considered valid for test. Codes 0 and 1 were represented by one patient each; code 2 was observed in 11 analyzed sextants; code 3 in 18 and code 4 in 22. We concluded that periodontal disease is very severe in diabetics. Based on oral manifestations of those patients, we may suggest that diabetes mellitus individuals should represent a special group that requires specific preventive and therapeutic odontological measures.

Palabras clave : diabetes mellitus; periodontal disease; metabolic control; CPITN index; specific measures.
