Introduction: student scientific activity is important to provide future professionals with training in research methods, channel their inquiries and encourage the development of values. Objective: explore students' opinions about their training to perform research tasks. Methods: across-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 28 dentistry students from the municipality of San Miguel del Padrón, Havana, from January to February 2012. The study was based on a survey developed by the authors and validated by experts. The variables studied were academic year, whether they felt they were ready to undertake research tasks, aspects contributing to their research skills and contribution of teachers to their research training, among others. Results: 67.85 % considered their training was sufficient to undertake research tasks; 64.28 % thought end-of-year subject evaluations were helpful to developed such abilities. Conclusion: It is the opinion of more than half of the students that their training has been sufficient to undertake research tasks, end-of-year evaluations are helpful for that activity, and the contribution of teachers has been good. As a result, students have engaged in novel research topics.
