Resumen

MERCADAL ORFILA, Gabriel et al. Therapeutic interchange of sulfonylureas in a third care level hospital: application and clinical evaluation of the protocol. Rev Cubana Farm [online]. 2005, vol.39, n.3. ISSN 0034-7515.

A case-control study was conducted on patients treated with sulfonylureas, where each cohort included 30 patients, with the objective of assessing the effectiveness and safety of the therapeutic interchange protocol of sulfonylureas in the glycemia control within the pharmaceutical care program fostered by Hospital Universitari de Bellwitge (Hospitalet de Llobregat-Barcelona. The control group (A): patients who continued being treated with the sulfonylurea that they were used to taking. The intervention group (B): patients treated with a sulfonylurea not included in the pharmacotherapeutic guide, who received the corresponding therapeutic equivalence, that is, 5mg of glibenclamide. Baseline glycemia means were compared, using Student t test for independent samples. The two groups under study showed baseline glycemia means lower than 140 mg/dL (131,46 and 128,76 mg/dL, respectively. The comparison of baseline glycemia means through Student t test for independent samples indicated that there were no statistically significant differences among them. Taking into account the limited number of patients, the study confirmed the effectiveness and safety of the therapeutic interchange protocol of sulfonylureas in which the baseline glycemia mean of patients was under 140mg/dL (7,8 mmol/L), a figure considered to be a limit value for patients with diabetes mellitus type 2.

Palabras clave : Therapeutic interchange; therapeutic equivalents; sulfonylurea; glibenclamide.
