Resumen

FURONES MOURELLE, Juan Antonio et al. Characterization of the studies of drug use published in Cuban medical journals, 1990-2003. Rev Cubana Farm [online]. 2006, vol.40, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2988.

Introduction: The analysis of the studies of drug use in a given country may help to know the research carried out in this field and detect deficiencies or untouched research aspects, and allow planning them more efficiently. Methods: a retrospective descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted to quantify and characterize the studies of drug use that have been published in Cuban medical journals from 1990 to 2003. The universe of study was all those studies published in Cuban medical journals from the Editorial de Ciencias Médicas . The main variables characterizing these studies such as specialization of the main author, province and level of care where the study was conducted, type of study, pharmacological group and data source were described. Numbers and percents were the summary measures used. Results: 785 numbers of medical journals were reviewed in which only 31 related articles were found, and an increased publication was observed from the year 2000 on. Physicians were the main researchers (80,6%) and the primary healthcare (67,7%) represented the most used medical care level. Surveys (58,1%) were the most used information source. Most of them were prescription-indication studies (48,4%) and the most studied pharmacological group was the anti-infection drugs (29%). Conclusions: The publication of studies of drug use is poor in the Cuban medical journals, which may reflect a lower production of this kind of research

Palabras clave : Studies of drug use; pharmacological epidemiology; prescription habits.
