The objective of this review was to perform a retrospective analysis of the advances which have taken place during the last years in arterial hypertension. A comment is a made from the epidemiological point of view about the close relationship between figures of arterial pressure and the incidence of cerebrovascular diseases. The role of oubain as a potent inhibitor of the energy-dependent sodium/potasium ATPasa pump is highlighted, as well as the role of endothelin as a vasoconstrictor substance, the linkage of insulin resistance and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system with hypertension. It is concluded that the ocurrent of research is focused in the search of an hypothesis to explain the pathogenesis of arterial hypertension on a cellular and molecular basis.
