An observational analytical case-control study was performed on asthmatic patients discharged from Internal Medicine Services after they suffered status asthmatics. These patients were the study group (cases) whereas ambulatory asthmatics from the health areas of the cases, who had not been hospitalized in the preceding year, were assigned to the control group. 94 out of 124 discharged asthmatics met the inclusion criteria; 93 % of them were interviewed. The two groups were compared in terms of composition according to intensity degrees of the disease, application of prevention therapy between asthma fits and the level of medical attention received in those places where they were cared. This was associated with either prescription or non prescription of the aforementioned therapy which became a protecting factor against the occurence of status asthmatics in moderate and severe asthmatic patients. It was shown that the majority of patients with preventive treatment (70 %) were regularly cared for in the secondary level of care.
