ISSN 0034-7523.

100 patients aged 60 or over with isolated or disproportioned systolic hypertension were studied to determine its repercussion on the cardiac and cerebral level. Chi square test was applied to evaluate the relationship between the time of evolution and the severity of systolic hypertension in the presence of the following complications: coronary disease, left ventricular hypertrophy, heart failure and cerebrovascular disease. It was proved that the time of evolution of systolic hypertension was associated in a statistically significant way with coronary disease (p=0.02), heart failure (p=0.04) and cerebrovascular disease (p=0.006). Likewise, a statistically marked relationship was observed between the severity of systolic hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (p=0.0001) and between this severity and cerebrovascular disease (p=0.04). It was concluded that the number of complications present in each patient increased as severity (p=0.0001) and the time of evolution (p=0.00l) of systolic hypertension rose
