A cross-sectional study was conducted from September to November, 1997, in Las Tunas municipality in order to evaluate the quality of the examination of the duodenal content taking into consideration clinical and laboratory aspects. The physicians knowledge about the usefulness of this diagnostic procedure as well as the competence of the technical personnel working in the Gastroenterolgy laboratory were also evaluated. Validated surveys and external quality controls were used. Inadequate medical practices, errors in parasitic identification and overdiagnosis made by the tehcnicians were detected. The improvement of the knowledge of the health personnel related to the parasitologic examination of the duodenal content was recommended
