It is known that one of the greatest challenges of immunology at present is to develop vaccines and immunotherapies that protect the patient against infection or that vary the effects of the immune response induced by the pathogenic agents. The studies that define the function of the different cytokines contribute to the progress of these new strategies in the management of the immune response. Recent studies show that interleukin 12 (IL-12) is a promoting key of cellular immunity and of the initial resistance to infections, a powerful stimulator of the defense of the guest against a variety of pathogens and that its therapeutic use is a big promise. It is affirmed that IL-12 antagonists protect the guest from immunopathology and death caused by the excess of immune cellular response that may occur during acute microbial infections
