Resumen

A prospective, cross-sectional and descriptive study of the patients admitted with diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) at the Intensive Care Unit of "Comandante Pinares" General Hospital from January to December, 2000, was conducted aimed at describing its behavior as regards the patients’ procedures, topography, fundamental form of onset and mortality in relation to sex. It was observed a predominance of cases from the urban areas (75.5 %). The inferior localization of AMI was the most frequent (51.1 % of the cases). Angina pectoris was the commonest form of onset. Mortality in our study was elevated, amounting to 9 deaths of a total of 45 patients (20 %). The highest mortality was detected among women (66.6 %).
