The retinoblastoma is considered as the paradigm of the hereditary tumor. Some of the characteristics of this tumor that determine the current interest in its study are explained in this paper. Emphasis is made on the fact the benefits attained with the new therapeutic schemes should be accompanied with actions that guarantee the reduction of the incidence of hereditary cases and, therefore, of the related mortality and morbidity for cost-benefit reasons and to increase the quality of life of patients and relatives.
