BENITEZ LLANES, Orestes et al. La biopsia renal en el diagnóstico de las glomerulopatías. Rev cubana med [online]. 2002, vol.41, n.2, pp.87-92. ISSN 0034-7523.

356 kidney biopsies were performed to 346 patients from October 31st, 1988, to October 31st, 1999. 348 of the biopsies proved to be useful (348/356; 97.8 %). The most frequent reasons for indicating kidney biopsies in patients with primary glomerulopathies were the asymptomatic urinary abnormalities (73/230; 31.7 %) and the nephrotic syndrome (68/230; 29.6 %). The average of attempts to perform a kidney biopsy was 2.2 ± 0.8. Complications resulting from kidney biopsy were observed in 30 patients (30/346; 8.7 %): 5 (5/30; 16.7 %), hematuria; 13 (13/30; 43.3 %), hematoma; and 12 (12/30; 40 %), both complications. The symptoms of clinical presentation were related to sex and it was obtained a significant difference (p <0.05). The nephrotic syndrome (NS), the acute nephritic syndrome and the macroscopic hematuria were more frequent among males. The rest of the syndromes were detected in females. 230 of the histological patterns that were obtained corresponded to primary glomerulonephritis, among which the disease due to minimal changes (45/230; 19.6 %) and the proliferative mesangial glomerulonephritis (36/2230; 15.7 %) were the most common causes. This procedure was considered as an essential component for studying patients with parenchimatous renal disease, mainly glomerulopathies, and its performance was suggested after a complete clinical evaluation.
