BORROTO DIAZ, Gerardo; BARCELO ACOSTA, Malicela; GUERRERO DIAZ, Carlos  y  PONCE PEREZ, Pedro. Infecciones en el trasplante renal. Rev cubana med [online]. 2002, vol.41, n.3, pp.162-166. ISSN 0034-7523.

It is known that infectious diseases are the most frequent cause of morbidity and mortality among patients with transplant and that the iatrogenic immunosuppression is the main risk factor for its appearance. A study of the kidney transplants performed at "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical and Surgical Hospital from 1985 to 1998, was conducted to determine the frequency of appearance of these complications. The urinary tract infection was considered as the first cause of sepsis in these patients, 235 cases (78.3 %) and a total of 705 episodes, in which the enterobacteria (mainly E. Coli) were the most commonly isolated germs. 30.2 % of the urinary tract infections occurred during the first three months and 69.8 % after that. They were followed in decreasing order by cutaneous infections, 210 patients (70.0 %); pneumonias, 98 (32.6 %); sepsis of the surgical wound; bacteremias and meningoencephalitis. The last two presented a high mortality.
