ISSN 0034-7523.

A descriptive study of 205 patients that were operated on due to affections of the major salivary glands during seven years at the Maxillofacial Surgery Service of "Arnaldo Milián Castro" Teaching Hospital, in Santa Clara, was conducted aimed at describing their frequency according to age, sex, biological behavior, anatomical localization, cytological result and histic corroboration. The surgical procedure used par excellence, subtotal parotidectomy, as well as the most frequent postoperative sequelae, among which the temporary paralysis of the facial nerve outstood, were described. It was proved that aspiration biopsy is a procedure of diagnostic accuracy in benign entities. It was observed a predominance of the neoplastic conditions in the parotid, whereas the chronic inflammatory processes were more common in the submandibular gland. The pleomorphic adenoma was the commonest among the benign neoplasias and the mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most usual in the malignant neoplasias.
