A prospective and observational study of all the patients that were diagnosed HIV-AIDS with acute respiratory infection (ARI) from January, 2001, to June, 2001, was conducted. A total population of 94 patients was studied. 44.7 % of them had chest X-rays with inflammatory opacities, whereas 26.6 % had normal chest X-rays. An image of pulmonary cavity was observed in the bacterial pneumonias and PCP. 100 % of the opacities caused by pleural effusion were parapneumonic. 100 % of the patients with bacteriological isolation to Rhodococcus equi had chest X-rays compatible with pulmonary cavity.
