SOCARRAS SUAREZ, María Matilde et al. Factores de riesgo de enfermedad aterosclerótica en la diabetes mellitus tipo 2. Rev cubana med [online]. 2003, vol.42, n.2, pp. 108-112. ISSN 1561-302X.
A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 199 patients with diagnosis of type II diabetes mellitus aimed at knowing the frequency of obesity, at describing diet habits and at determining if there is an association between obesity and the presence of cardiovascular risk factors, such as arterial hypertension, dyslipidaemia, hyperinsulinaemia, smoking, microalbuminuria and first-line family history of obesity. The variance analysis was used for the comparative analysis of the continual variables between obese and non-obese patients, whereas the chi square test was applied in the case of the categoric variables. A significance level of 0.05 was used in all cases. It was found a frequency of 80.4 % of obese, who have a higher diet transgression. A strong association between obesity, arterial hypertension, fasting hyperinsulinemia and an elevated percentage of obese individuals with first-line family history of obesity was also observed. It was concluded that diabetic patients with a higher number of diet transgressions are obese and have a higher risk of cardiovascular factors that may lead them to develop more complications of atherosclerotic origin.
