Abstract

NASIFF-HADAD, Alfredo  and  MERINO-IBARRA, Erardo. Ácidos grasos omega-3: pescados de carne azul y concentrados de aceites de pescado. Lo bueno y lo malo. Rev cubana med [online]. 2003, vol.42, n.2, pp.128-133. ISSN 0034-7523.

A review was made on the beneficial and detrimental effect of omega-3 fatty acids in subjects with diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension and dislipidaemias, as well as on their effects on homeostasis and other organs and systems. It was concluded that the intake of blue meat fish 2 or 3 times a week is a dietary recommendation for the whole population and that the consumption of fish oil at moderate doses (up to 3g a day) is beneficial for patients suffering from diabetes, arterial hypertension and hypertriglyceridemia as a coadjuvant treatment. It also reduces platelet aggregation and the synthesis of the chemical mediators of inflammation. Elevated doses of fish oil may be harmful for glucemic control and arterial hypertension in sensitive persons and for the serum levels of low density lipoproteins (LDL) and high level lipoproteins (HDL).
