A review of the early diagnosis of atherosclerosis was made by studying the carotid intima-media thickness and its correlation with the coronary artery disease. A detailed account of the technique used at the Institute of Cardiology and Vascular Surgery was made. The results obtained on dividing into quartiles the intima media thickness from healthy persons and from patients with diverse cardiovascular diseases were shown. The risk groups were established. It was concluded that the measure is non-invasive, reproducible and that it allows to have a prognosis under subclinical and clinical conditions of atherosclerosis.
