Upper gastrointestinal bleeding, frequent health problem in the world and relevant cause of morbility and mortality in all age groups, present a great clinical importance. A prospective-descriptive research was carried out with the ain to characterize clinically the patients with performed esoagogastroduodenoscopy because of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the gastroenterologic departments of 10 de Octubre and Miguel Enriquez hospitals in the last 6 months of 1999. Gastrointestinal bleeding was predominant on women (64.11 %) and in 60 years and older patients (48,32 %). The most frequent cause of hemorrage was duodenal ulcer (38.27 %) being melena mostly observed (50,7 %). Forrest IIc stage was predominant in patients who suffered from ulcer and many patient presented personal antecedent and the most frequent one was (N.S.A.I.) non steroideal anti-inflammatory drugs intake.
