The death certificates of 3 387 diabetic patients, who died in Havana City, in 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1997, and whose main cause of death was diabetes, were reviewed. The National Statistics Divison of the Ministry of Public Health keeps these certificates. 2 189 were females (64.6 %) and 1 198 males (335.4 %). 64 % of the dead were over 70, whereas 16 % were under 60. The most common direct causes of death found were myocardial infarction with 905 deaths (rate 45.25), bronchopneumonia with 575 (rate 28.75), metabolic disorder with 327 (rate 16.35) and renal failure with 229 (rate 11.45). According to the place of death during the 3 years, 75 % died in the hospital and 20.6 % at home. As regards the deaths due to acute metabolic disorder (total 235) there have been no positive changes since 1991.
