HURTADO DE MENDOZA AMAT, José et al. Cancer in Cuba. Evaluation of the quality of the premortem diagnoses according to the Automated System of Register and Control in Pathological Anatomy. Rev cubana med [online]. 2004, vol.43, n.1. ISSN 0034-7523.

14 553 cancers extracted from the Autopsy Database of the National Center of the Automated System of Register and Control of Pathological Anatomy (ASRCPA) were studied aimed at determining their general characteristics and, in special, the main cancers, direct causes of death and evaluation of the premortem diagnoses. 51 institutions from the 14 provinces of the country and the Isle of Youth are represented Data from 1962 to 2001 were collected. The most frequent cancers were lung cancer, colon cancer and lymphomas. All ages were included and the most represented decade was 65-74 years old, with 24.3 %. The M/F index was 1.44. Infection, particularly bronchopneumonia, was the most frequent direct cause of death. On evaluating the quality of the diagnosis, the discrepancy of the malignant cancers in general was 18 %, and in relation to the direct causes of death it was 32.9 %. Pancreas cancer, as a basic cause of death, had the highest diagnostic discrepancy, with 21.3 %, whereas in its direct causes of death it attained 41.1 %. It was stressed the importance of using the multiple causes of death in the study of cancer and reaffirming the role of autopsy as the most complete study of the patient/disease and as a guarantee of the medical work's quality.
