A descriptive prospective study was conducted at "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical and Surgical Hospital, in Havana City, to determine the differences in the score of Folstein's Minimental State in Alzheimer's dementia, vascular dementia and dementia associated with Parkinson's disease, as well as the most affected cognitive functions in each of them. 45, 12 and 14 patients, that were respectively diagnosed from January 1st, 1997, to January 31st, 1999, were analyzed. The percentages and the standard deviation were calculated. It was found that the mean value of Minimental State was lower in Alzheimer's dementia (16.3), followed by vascular dementia (17.2) and dementia associated with Parkinson's disease (17.9). Alzheimer's disease presented higher affectation of the immediate memory and attention. In the vascular dementia, it was observed a higher deterioration of orientation, and in the dementia associated with Parkinson's disease the most significant affectation was detected in the mediate memory, writing and copying. A difference was found in the mean values of the different types of dementia studied, as well as in the mental functions affected according to the dementia variant.
