A retrospective, descriptive and cross-sectional research was carried out from January, 1993, to January, 2003, in order to characterize the patients admitted at the Intensive Care Unit of "Abel Santamaría" Clinical and Surgical Hospital of Pinar del Río, with the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. The sample was composed of 51 patients. The necrotizing clinical form, as well as the systemic complications, which were also more frequent in it, predominated. It was observed a higher number of patients with severe pancreatitis. Most of them corresponded with the necrotizing variant. Mortality was only evidenced severe pancreatitis, which accounted for approximately the fourth part of these patients.
