A bibliographic review on the syndrome of systemic inflammatory response was made, and the essential concepts for understading this syndrome were defined. The updated physiopathology including the role of mediators, the importance of the endothelium, the leukocytes and the free radicals were described in a precise and summarized way. The present hypothesis was exposed in the genesis of the syndrome, and the surveillance and follow-up of these affected patiens were also dealt with.
