Abstract

Renal transplantation activity is started in Cuba in February 24, 1970 using a cadaver donor. In 1979 the renal transplantation is begun with a related live donor and of first line. There are 47 hospital distributed in all the country where 2 775 patients in substitution method of renal function are seen. From them, 1 440 are waiting for a renal transplantation. To obtain the visceral organs devoted to the renal program are 63 accredited hospitals where the multidisciplinary way of encephalic death is managed, and thanks to this situation, more than 90% of the transplantations performed by years are from cadaver donor. Selection of the suitable recipient is made through a national computerized program on equal terms for all the patients it doesn't matter the distance from the transplantation center having as the fundamental bases the compatibility in HLA major system.
