OCHOA MONTES, Luis Alberto et al. Risk factors of the metabolic syndrome in the cardiac sudden death. Rev cubana med [online]. 2011, vol.50, n.4, pp.426-244. ISSN 0034-7523.

Objective: To characterize the behavior of risk factors from the metabolic syndrome in the victims of cardiac sudden death. Methods: A cross-sectional, prospective, descriptive and observational study was conducted in the victims of the cardiac sudden death in the health areas from the Arroyo Naranjo municipality during 2007-2008 with the participation of the "Julio Trigo López" Medical Sciences University, the Cuban Group for the study of the Cardiac Sudden Death and the "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical Surgical Hospital. The SUCADES II study (Sudden Cardiac Death Study) included a population of 210 000 inhabitants with a 2-years follow-up and a register of 1 655 natural death, in which authors applied the criteria of cardiac sudden death according to Health World Organization. A total of 173 cases were included. The behavior of different atherogenic risk factors that be part of the metabolic syndrome were characterized. Results: The 10.4 % of study death were sudden. In the 9.3 % of cases it was verified by the presence of the metabolic syndrome. The atherogenic risk factors documented were the high blood pressure (79.8 %), dyslipidemia (24.3 %), diabetes mellitus (23.1 %) and obesity (20.2 %). There were three factors of the metabolic syndrome in the 9.3 % of cases. Conclusions: Presence of risk factors of the metabolic syndrome in victims of cardiac sudden death was frequent emphasizing the high blood pressure and the dyslipidemias.
