BUCHACA FAXAS, Emilio Fidel; FERNANDEZ VALDES, Francisco; RODRIGUEZ AMADOR, Lays  and  BERMUDEZ ROJAS, Sergio. Clinical perspective of glycemic disorders in hospitalized patients. Rev cubana med [online]. 2014, vol.53, n.1, pp. 61-75. ISSN 0034-7523.

Hyperglycemia associated with hospitalization is a frequent occurrence in clinical practice and it has gained particular relevance as a prognostic biomarker of clinical outcome in subjects admitted for different reasons. Patients with diabetes mellitus are a particular risk group who frequently present acute situations requiring care services in health institutions. In this review the diagnostic criteria of the various disorders of blood glucose are updated; the main pathogenic and pathophysiologic mechanisms determining its onset and probable association with medical complications are discussed. Goals of glycemic control for different clinical situations are also presented.
