The main “roots” of the clinical method is briefly presented. Professors Fidel Ilizástigui Dupuy and Luis Rodríguez Rivera in their monograph published in 1989 emphasize the originality and importance of this conceptualization and the proposals for practice, as well as the importance for training and practice of health professionals. Mention is made of the subsequent contributions that have enriched the knowledge on the subject, especially from Cuban authors. The existence, or not, of a Cuban school of clinical method is valued. Reflexions on the current situation of the use of the clinical method, as well as old and new questions and possible solutions to the barriers that stand in the proper use of this method.
