Along a 12-years period (1985-1996) the Cuban Registry of malformations has analyzed a total of 520 578 births from 36 gynecological obstetrical hospitals in all the 14 provinces of Cuba, of which 9 362 newborns presented at least one malformation found before the discharge from hospital. Of these, 397 newborns had the Down’s syndrome, for a prevalence at birth of 7,8/10 000 births in the period. When the cases diagnosed and interrupted by the National Program of Cytogenetical Prenatal Diagnosis (125) were included, then an incidence at birth of 9,8/10 000 born alive was estimated. The prevalence trend at birth of the Down’s syndrome was analyzed related to ther fertility rate and the maternal age. In mothers under 20 years of age, the prevalence at birth remained stable, and the fertility rate decreased. In the other groups, from 20 to 34 years and over 35 years of age, the prevalence at birth, as well as the fertility rate, decreased. On the whole, the prevalence at birth, as well as the estimated incidence at birth, have a decreasing trend in this period.
