MARTIN, Frank Felipe et al. Complicaciones mecánicas del abordaje venoso profundo en una unidad de cuidados intensivos. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 1999, vol.71, n.1, pp.28-32. ISSN 0034-7531.

A study of 266 central venous percutaneous catheterizations that were performed among 210 patients admitted at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Provincial Pediatric Teaching Hospital, in Sancti Spiritus, in a period of 2 years, was conducted. 20 mechanical complications were found that accounted for 7,5 % of the cases. Children aged 5-14 had complications more frequently. The jugular venous approach got the highest percent. None of these complications was fatal. It is estimated that this study could help to continue introducing the use of central venous percutaneous approach into the management of the severe pediatric patient on the basis of rigorous criteria, and assessing the risks and benefits this procedure may have.
